Solent Running Sisters have run Beginners' Courses for many years now - enabling many women to start running.
We also run follow on courses, 5k with confidence and 10k with confidence.
Whether your ambition is to run 5 km or (eventually!) a marathon, starting out well is essential, picking up good habits and building up your endurance. Running in a group really helps - quality conversation makes a session much easier and we support each other. There is no such thing as "too slow" - we organise sessions so that nobody is left behind and nobody is held back. In fact, we are often advising beginners to "slow down" if they are to meet their distance objectives!
We run 2 or 3 Beginners' Courses every year, limited by the availability of our volunteer leaders and of our regular runners who also pitch in to help. Each one is a 10 week course with 1 club session per week. There is a manual we supply as a pdf as well as homework. We run the courses from our regular training session locations, alternating between Southampton & Eastleigh for a full course.
Our new Beginners tend to progress brilliantly when running 2 or 3 times a week - many buddy up to do their homework sessions together. It also helps if you can undertake some low impact aerobic exercise too - which can be as simple as taking more walks.
Cost is currently £36. This includes the course, EA affiliation, a reflective vest and membership for the current year.
Future courses will be announced here and on Facebook. If you are currently unable to walk at a good pace for 45 minutes, you may find the programme too hard. If this is the case, we recommend building up your walking gradually for a few weeks before embarking on our running course.
If you have health concerns, it is advisable to talk to your GP before committing to our Beginners' Course - and we strongly suggest that you follow any medical advice you are given.
