Races We Enjoy Taking Part In
As a Solent Running Sister, you will have plenty of opportunity to take part in local races as well as those further afield. You'll usually find a couple of running buddies so you won't need to be on your own!
Most of the races we do are detailed below - and lots are set up as events on our Facebook page (Solent Running Sisters) - so you can see who is going which can be useful for lift sharing as well as moral support! For races, we encourage members to wear SRS kit - it makes it easier to find your running buddies!
Cross Country: Throughout the winter there is a local race series known as the CCS. CCS races are cross country races that take place around Hampshire on Sunday mornings. They're typically about 4.5 miles and are free for members - you simply turn up & run but you will need to wear a club top (get in touch to order or borrow one). Locations include some stunning New Forest runs. Organised by local running clubs, these are friendly, if often somewhat muddy events! Click here to find out more.
The RR10 is a series of cross country races of about 4.5-5 miles that take place on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer, replacing the Wednesday night run from St Deny's. Once again, these are free for members and you simply turn up & run - but like the CC6 series, you do need to be wearing a club top. Again, these are organised by local running clubs and take place in various scenic spots in south Hampshire. Click here to find out more.
Volunteering: The Solent Running Sisters organise one of the races in both the CC6 and the RR10 race series. We will ask on our Facebook group for volunteers to help us organise the race. It is a great way to give back to the running community. You can get in touch with our race directors (Sue Leith and Emma Blake) via email@example.com if you would like to know any more about the CC6 or RR10 races.
Although we run as fast and as well as we can, taking part and supporting each other is more important. We encourage faster finishers to stay and cheer in the other Running Sisters over the finish line.
Hampshire Road Race League Series: This is a league series so you will be able to see how you're fairing against other competitors across all events. The list of races changes every year but regular fixtures include Gosport Half Marathon, Lordshill 10, Ryde 10, Alton 10 and Solent Half Marathon. Click here to find out more. When entering, if you are an affiliated EA member, select "affiliated" if available in the options as this will give you a discount - and please do specify Solent Running Sisters as your team!
parkruns: Sisters will often be found at the numerous local parkruns including Southampton, Eastleigh and Netley. We've even been spotted at parkruns in the USA, Canada and Australia!
In case you don't know, parkrun is a series of free 5K events that take place in hundreds of locations worldwide - all at 9am, every Saturday. parkrun is a brilliant way to meet up with your running friends & track your progress compared to previous parkrun events. You need to register on the parkrun website before taking part (this is free too). Click here to find out more.
London Marathon: This iconic marathon takes place in April every year. Each year the club has 1 place that we can allocate to a Sister. There is high demand for this place so we have an application procedure to ensure that they are allocated fairly to members. you can read more on the membership page.
